ART REFLECTS LIFE
We are the Ribola artists and crafters…the storytellers. We listen to the stories hidden in the wood and bring the cultural richness of our people to life through our sculptures, pots, drums and textiles. We translate the symbology and ancient traditions into art that cuts through the years and the miles between us with a universal message.
With one foot in The Now, we create connection between the rich myths and legends of our past and the collective consciousness of a post-Covid world. We follow the threads of a future as elusive as a cure for our common afflictions…we listen to the small voice of hope inside our souls and find ways to tell the stories of our communities which have been forever changed.
"We are the lucky ones…we are used to living with nothing but the passion in our hearts and waking up to a knowing which comes from the whispers of our ancestors. We are adaptable to change... we can stand back and observe things playing out around our world as the pandemic rages through our communities and economy, even as our souls are cut to ribbons by what we see."
Covid has turned everything we knew upside down and yet we are still creating. We have a memory of happier times of visitors from far flung places… the Netherlands, Germany and France spending time with us in the village, alive with sounds and colour, smiles and greetings now muted by masks.
In this, a new era for the Ribola Art Route, we embrace the technology of the fourth industrial revolution and reach out to you across the miles, creating connection to our stories through the pieces we have crafted for this online exhibition and auction. Our Art reflects life and the devastating impact this pandemic has had on our loved ones, but it also reveals our resilience in a Brave New World.

...IN A BRAVE NEW WORLD
"Artists are the curators of our common history… they shape the story of humanity."
Evolution comes with the chipping away of the unnecessary to find what is essential… the essence. It would be a travesty not to fully value the artists of the Ribola Art Route, a loose association of Artists and Crafters near Elim, Limpopo, at a time when we need to tune in and listen like never before. We need to be enthralled.. inspired and changed by the messages carved from leadwood, kiaat and yellowwood but Covid-19 has curtailed connection. Through this collaboration with the artists of the Ribola Art Route, The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and The Traveling Circus, an unusual opportunity arose not only for these Visionaries to create unique Art-works which talk to our changed circumstances but also to connect them to a global community of Art enthusiasts who could transform lives not only through financial support but also recognition and acclaim.
Invest in some of the most exciting art to come out of Limpopo in these exceptional times. Purchase the entire, unique collection, or bid on individual pieces during our online auction.
* We will be going live at 18h00 on Monday the 28th of September 2020 until 21h00 on Tuesday the 29th of September 2020.
Although we will want to leave the hardships of this pandemic behind, it remains a unique moment in history, skilfully captured in wood and steel by these six artists. In this Brave New World, post Covid-19 may we tune in, create connection across the masks and the miles…may we see the honesty of our changed human condition through the eyes of these artists and begin the journey to healing.
